Started in 1989 as a more bluegrass-focused group with Maguire and Robison then going by their birth surnames of Erwin along with Laura Lynch and Robin Lynn Macy, the team failed to reach popular success until Lynch and Macy left and were replaced by lead vocalist Natalie Maines. Both it and its follow-up, 1999's Fly, attained the group a few Grammy Awards and chart singles. Two more records, Home and Taking the Long Approach, followed in 2002 and 2006, respectively, on Columbia Records. These latter four records have now been certified double platinum or higher by the RIAA, with the highest-certified being Spacious Spaces at 12? Platinum for U.S. shipments of twelve million copies.

A seventh, a variation of the Fleetwood Mac song "Landslide", was also a 1St Hit on the Adult Contemporary chart. Little Ol' Cowgirl is the 2nd facilities album by American country group Dixie Girls, released in 1992 (see 1992 in music). As with their previous record, it produced no graph singles. It was also the last album to feature Robin Lynn Macy, who left in late 1992 over a difference of opinion with the Er-Win siblings over the audio path of the band.
The song "After Dark Point of Recovery" was also recorded by Hal Ketchum on his 1991 album Past the Point of Rescue, where it was released as an individual in 1992.

The album has marketed 8,841,000 copies in the United States as of October 2013.
